I interned in the Web department at KTLA News in Los Angeles in the summer of 2008. I was responsible for editing news packets broadcast on television into smaller clips and uploading them onto the KTLA Web site. Each day after I finished uploading videos from that morning’s and the previous night’s broadcast, I scanned the AP wires for newsworthy stories that made good additions to the site and worked on some original stories of my own. I also worked at Concord Music Group during the summer of 2008 doing publicity and marketing. I prepared press kits, mailed press releases and advance CDs and conducted research on target demographics for touring artists. I have also written for The Cactus Yearbook and my high school newspaper at Midland Senior High School in Midland, TX. I am currently in my fourth year at The University of Texas in Austin. I will graduate in December 2009 with a degree in multimedia journalism and a business foundations certificate. Here are a couple of works of mine that have been published. The following appeared on the KTLA and LA Times Web sites. It is an article I wrote on an emerging type of renewable energy that uses buoys to harness wave and tidal energy and convert it to usable power. This is a feature that I wrote on Austin singer/songwriter Sara Hickman. After completing the article, Kathleen Hudson, author of Women in Texas Music, asked if she could use the article on her Web Site. My hobbies include playing music (guitar, slide, lap steel, banjo, mandolin and sitar), writing, film-making, making Web pages and cooking. Here is a video of me playing slide guitar at Club 2000 with some locals in Clarksdale, MS, the home of the crossroads. My career goal is to spread the music of different regions across the world, giving people a better understanding of others cultures and fostering interest in the creation of music. I plan to do so through a combination of efforts. I hope to be able to perform music as much as possible, incorporating all the styles that have influenced me in hopes that I can do the same for others. I aspire to travel to the various corners of the world and teach what I know to those who wish to learn, while learning as much as I can from all who are willing to teach me. I hope that I can then document and disseminate this knowledge through my writing, film-making and Web design. I am very sociable and work well with others. I am also proficient with both Windows and Mac OS. I have a very strong technical background because I started out studying mechanical journalism and I am very interested I the way things work. |
